So you've done it! You have successfully gained your learner's permit and are ready to hit the road. Choosing professional driving lessons is a great way
to help you become a fantastic driver, whether this is your very first time in the driver's seat, have been driving overseas, or simply need a brush up on some specific skills. No Yelling's 5-star instructors can help you, no matter your journey.
How to prepare
Once you've been carefully matched up with an instructor to fit your needs, there are a few things it's important to have ready to go for your first lesson to ensure it starts smoothly and you get the most out of your lesson.
Meeting your instructor
After your instructor and you have set an agreed lesson time, they will drive to your chosen address to meet you. This might be your home address, school, or workplace. Most students prefer to undertake all their lessons in their instructor's car, as they are fitted out with dual controls to ensure to keep you safe during the learning process. If you would like to use your own car, you will need to wait until your instructor is confident with your skills to do this. Your instructor's car will already have L-plates fitted and No Yelling magnets, so you know what to look out for.
Car introduction
When first hoping in the car your instructor will take you through all the controls of the dashboard and then teach you how to best adjust the seat, steering wheel, and mirrors for your height. This process will ensure that no matter the vehicle, you'll be able to set it up to drive safely and with the best possible vision of what's happening around you.
First drive
Don't be alarmed if you live in a busy area, your instructor will not get you to start driving somewhere intimidating straight away. Back streets or an empty car park is where they'll first take you. You will probably not be doing a large distance of driving and definitely no tricky maneuvers at the start of your journey. Your instructor will want to make sure you have basic control of the car and an understanding of the controls before you begin anything more difficult. Your instructor will be calm and very clear with their directions and your job will be to listen and follow everything they say. Don't worry if you need to ask them to explain something more than once, they understand that new things are hard, no questions are silly, and that it takes practice to get right.
Making Mistakes
When learning a new skill, everyone is bound to make many mistakes. Your instructors know this and have had extensive practice in staying calm, safe, and in control, no matter the situation, and have the reflexes and skills to help move the vehicle to safety if needed. Ending the lesson At the end of your lesson, your instructor will likely help guide you to park the car using front or curbside straight parking. They will ensure to give you constructive feedback on how you went and what to practice before your next lesson. Feedback from your instructor will help you continue to improve and is personalised to your current skills. Don't hesitate to ask your instructor to write notes down in your logbook or take your own notes on your phone to help you ensure that you get the most out of your lessons. Your instructors want to see you succeed and feel confident, and will help you in any way that they can to achieve this. After your lesson has been completed, it's a great idea to discuss with them another date and time for your next lesson or they can even help you buy a lesson package to save you some money. This will help you stay accountable to practice and continue steadily on your learning journey.
The No Yelling team wishes you all the best for your first lesson. We know that you'll do great!
