Mastering the Art of Mirror Adjustment: A Step-by-Step Guide

When you learn to drive, one of the first and most important safety habits you’ll pick up is adjusting your mirrors correctly. It’s a small detail that makes a big difference in how confident and aware you feel behind the wheel. At No Yelling Driving School, we believe that good mirror habits are part of high-quality driver's education, helping new drivers stay calm, focused, and in control on every trip.

Many learners think that mirror adjustment is just a glance before they start driving, but it’s actually a skill that takes practice and understanding. This guide will walk you through how to set your mirrors properly and how to use them effectively while driving.

Why Mirror Adjustment Matters

Mirrors are your extra eyes on the road. They give you a full picture of what’s happening around your car, behind you, beside you, and in your blind spots. When mirrors are set up the wrong way, you can miss other cars, cyclists, or pedestrians, especially in Brisbane’s busy urban areas.

Proper mirror adjustment helps you:

Avoid blind spots

Change lanes safely

Reverse with confidence

Keep a steady awareness of surrounding traffic

At No Yelling, our driving instructors teach mirror use as part of every lesson because it builds confidence and supports defensive driving habits, two key parts of enjoyable and safe learning.

Sit in Your Normal Driving Position

Before adjusting anything, sit comfortably in the driver’s seat the way you would when driving. Make sure your seat height and distance from the pedals and steering wheel are all set. You should be able to reach everything easily without stretching or leaning.

This is important because if your seat position changes after adjusting the mirrors, your mirrors will no longer be set correctly.

Adjust the Rear-View Mirror

The rearview mirror gives you a direct view out of your back window. Hold the mirror with both hands and move it so that you can see as much of the rear window as possible. You should be able to see straight back without needing to tilt your head.

Tip from No Yelling Driving Lessons Brisbane:

Keep your rear-view mirror level. The horizon should be in the middle of the mirror that way, you can clearly see both the road and any cars behind you.

Adjust the Right-Side Mirror

Your right side mirror (driver’s side) should show a small part of your car along the inner edge and the lane beside you. You should be able to see vehicles approaching from behind and to your side without having to lean forward.

A common mistake new drivers make is turning the mirror too far inward so it shows too much of the car. This reduces your side visibility. The goal is to minimise overlap between what you see in the rearview and side mirrors.

Adjust the Left Side Mirror

For the left mirror, lean your head slightly towards the window (about two centimeters). From that position, adjust the mirror so that you can just see the side of your car. When you return to your normal sitting position, the mirror will show more of the left lane, giving you a wider view of what’s beside and behind you.

Because Australia uses right-hand driving, your left side mirror becomes especially important for watching vehicles passing or merging into your lane on multi-lane roads around Brisbane.

Test Your View

Once your mirrors are set, test them before driving off. Sit in your normal position and look through each mirror in sequence: rearview, right, and left. The view should transition smoothly from one mirror to the next without big gaps.

If you notice a “blind spot”, an area you can’t see in any mirror, make a note of it. You’ll still need to do quick shoulder checks before changing lanes or merging.

At No Yelling Driving School, we help learners practice this mirror-scan routine until it becomes automatic. It’s one of the habits that helps drivers stay relaxed and confident in traffic.

Use Your Mirrors Constantly

Good mirror adjustment is only half the skill the other half is using them regularly. Check your mirrors:

Every 5–8 seconds while driving

Before changing lanes or turning

Before slowing down or stopping

When reversing or parking

This rhythm keeps you aware of what’s happening behind you and prepares you to react calmly if something changes. Our professional driving instructors remind learners that confident driving is all about awarenessc, not rushing, but noticing.

No Yelling Driving School encourages all learners to practice mirror adjustment before every drive. Over time, this simple step becomes part of your driving routine, a quiet moment that sets you up for safe, confident, and enjoyable driving.
