If you're looking to get your learner licence in Brisbane (or anywhere in Queensland), there are specific steps and requirements you must follow. Here’s everything you need to know about the process.
1. Meet the Age Requirement
- You must be at least 16 years old to apply for a Queensland learner licence.
2. Create a QGov Account
- You’ll need a QGov account to access online services for your learner application.
- This allows you to book your test and manage your licence details.
3. Pass the PrepL Course or the Written Road Rules Test
You have two options to demonstrate your knowledge of road rules:
Option 1: Complete PrepL (Online Course & Test) – Recommended
- PrepL is an interactive online learning and assessment program designed to teach road rules, safe driving, and hazard awareness.
- It takes around 4-6 hours to complete (but you can do it at your own pace).
- Available online through the Queensland Transport and Main Roads (TMR) website.
- Once you pass PrepL, you won’t need to take a separate written test.
Option 2: Take the Written Road Rules Test (In-Person at TMR)
- If you prefer, you can take a 30-question multiple-choice written test at a Transport and Main Roads (TMR) Customer Service Centre.
- You must score at least 27/30 to pass.
4. Gather Your Documents & Visit TMR
After passing PrepL or the written test, you’ll need to visit a TMR Customer Service Centre with:
✅ Proof of identity (e.g., birth certificate, passport)
✅ Evidence of Queensland residency
✅ Application form (F3000) (available on the TMR website or at a service centre)
✅ Payment for the learner licence fee
At the service centre, you will:
- Have your photo taken
- Complete an eye test
5. Pay the Learner Licence Fee
The cost depends on how long you want the licence to be valid for:
- 1 year – $90.45
- 2 years – $125.80
- 3 years – $160.75
- 4 years – $195.50
- 5 years – $229.75
(Prices are subject to change, so check with TMR Queensland for the latest fees.)
6. Receive Your Learner Licence
- Once you pass all the requirements and pay the fee, you’ll receive your learner licence!
- Your physical licence will be mailed to you, but you can start driving immediately with a temporary licence.
Rules for Learner Drivers in Queensland
Once you have your Ls, you must follow these rules:
Always display L plates on the front and back of the vehicle.
Be supervised by an open licence holder who has had their licence for at least 1 year.
No mobile phone use (including hands-free, Bluetooth, or speakerphone).
Follow the 100 km/h speed limit (even if the road limit is higher).
Zero alcohol and drug policy – you must have a 0.00 BAC.
Log at least 100 hours of supervised driving (including 10 night hours) if you’re under 25.
If you follow these instructions, getting your learner's license in Brisbane (or anyplace else in Queensland) is simple. Passing this phase is the first step to obtaining your P plates and increasing your driving independence, regardless of whether you go for PrepL or the written exam.
